Aluminium vs Glass Pool Fencing — Adelaide Comparison

Aluminium vs glass pool fencing in Adelaide: costs, looks, upkeep and SA barrier rules compared, so you can choose the right fence for your pool.

Published 7 May 2026 · Updated 8 October 2026

Aluminium vs glass pool fencing comes down to budget and looks. Tubular aluminium is the cheaper, practical option, typically $2,500 – $7,000 for an Adelaide pool. Frameless glass costs more, typically $5,500 – $14,000, but keeps the view open. Both can be built to meet South Australia’s pool barrier rules; the right one depends on your pool, block and budget.

Prices are indicative for a typical residential pool. Your quote depends on the fence length, number of gates, ground conditions and fixings.

Tubular aluminium pool fencing

Powder-coated aluminium posts and vertical bars, with self-closing, self-latching gates. It’s the most common pool fence in Adelaide because it’s affordable, quick to install and handles uneven ground well. It comes in standard colours such as black, charcoal and white, and suits family pools, long boundary runs and sloping blocks.

The main downside is looks: the bars break up the view of the pool. Look after the powder coating by washing off dust and pool chemicals now and then, and keep gate hinges and latches adjusted so the gate always closes and latches by itself.

Frameless glass pool fencing

Toughened glass panels held by stainless-steel spigots or channels, with no top rail. Frameless glass is the premium option, and its big advantage is visibility: you can see the pool, and anyone in it, from the house and the yard. It suits modern homes, small courtyards where a bulky fence would dominate, and pools built as a feature.

It costs more to supply and install, and it needs firm, well-designed fixings, especially on suspended decks, retaining walls and sloping ground. Glass shows water spots and dust, so plan on regular cleaning. For pool fence panels that need a proper clean, professional Adelaide window cleaning can cover the glass on the same visit as your house windows.

Semi-frameless glass

Glass panels held between slim aluminium or stainless posts. It gives much of the open look of frameless glass at a lower cost, and the posts make it more forgiving on sloping ground. It’s a sensible middle option when glass appeals but the budget is tighter.

The SA rules apply to every option

Whichever material you choose, the barrier has to meet South Australia’s pool safety rules:

  • at least 1.2 metres high, and at least 1.8 metres on the pool side where a boundary fence forms part of the barrier
  • gaps under and between fence members of less than 100mm
  • a non-climbable zone kept clear of pots, furniture, BBQs and garden beds
  • gates that swing outwards, self-close from any position and self-latch, with the latch at least 1.5 metres above ground or shielded
  • a visible CPR sign for new pools

The detailed requirements sit in the Building Code and AS 1926.1. Read our SA pool fencing rules guide and check anything specific to your pool with your council. A new pool barrier generally needs development approval, and council inspects it once it’s complete.

Does glass fencing add value?

The fence takes up a large part of any view, and any photo, of a pool area, so frameless glass can make a pool look more modern. Whether that is worth the extra cost depends on your home, your budget and how long you plan to stay. If you’re selling, the more important point is that the barrier is in good order: gates that close and latch, no climbable objects nearby and no gaps under the fence. If the pool was approved before 1 July 1993, its safety features must meet Ministerial Building Standard MBS 004 before settlement.

Which should you choose?

  • Budget or long fence runs: tubular aluminium.
  • Feature pool, view line or small courtyard: frameless glass.
  • Want the glass look for less, or sloping ground: semi-frameless.

Many pools combine options, such as glass on the side facing the house and aluminium along the back boundary, to balance cost and looks.

Frequently asked questions

Is glass pool fencing more expensive than aluminium?

Yes. Frameless glass typically costs $5,500 – $14,000 for an Adelaide pool, compared with $2,500 – $7,000 for tubular aluminium. Semi-frameless glass usually sits in between.

Is frameless glass pool fencing safe?

Yes, when it’s designed and installed to meet the Building Code and AS 1926.1, using toughened safety glass, properly engineered fixings and compliant gate hardware.

Can I mix glass and aluminium pool fencing?

Yes. Combining materials is common and can keep costs down, provided the whole barrier meets the rules and the gates are compliant.

Which pool fence is easiest to maintain?

Aluminium needs the least cleaning; check the hardware and wash off dust now and then. Glass needs regular cleaning to look its best, plus periodic checks of spigots and hinges.
