Spa installation cost in Adelaide — three tiers

What you pay depends on how the spa is set in the ground, the finish around it and what needs doing to the site. Your written quote breaks every part out line by line.

Outdoor spa drop-in — $8,000 – $20,000

A self-contained acrylic spa set on a new concrete pad, with electrical and plumbing connected. Two to six seats, hydrotherapy jets and an insulated cabinet. The quickest install, often done in about a week once the slab has cured.

Typical scope: spa unit, slab, electrical, plumbing tie-in.

Semi-recessed and integrated — $15,000 – $32,000

The spa is set into a deck or paving so the rim sits low or flush, with timber, stone or planter surrounds. It looks built-in rather than sitting on top of the yard.

Typical scope: excavation, slab, spa unit, electrical, integrated surrounds.

In-ground concrete spa — $28,000 – $65,000+

A custom concrete spa, either standalone or built next to a pool with shared equipment. Tile or pebble interior, hydrotherapy jets, automation and lighting.

Typical scope: engineered slab, concrete shell, premium interior, equipment.

What a spa installation involves

  1. Site visit. We look at where the spa will go, how it gets there (a 2.2m spa often needs a clear path or a crane), the ground, drainage and the distance to your switchboard.
  2. Base. Most outdoor spas need a level, reinforced concrete slab sized to the spa. A full spa is heavy, so a deck or old paving usually isn’t enough without engineering.
  3. Power. Most spas need a dedicated circuit from the switchboard, installed by a licensed electrician. Older Adelaide homes sometimes need switchboard work first, which we flag in the quote.
  4. Placement and surrounds. The spa is set in place, levelled and connected, then the deck, paving or planter surrounds go in.
  5. Fencing and approval. We sort the safety barrier and any approval the spa needs.
  6. Commissioning and handover. We fill, balance and heat the water, then show you how to run, clean and cover the spa.

Spa fencing and approvals in South Australia

Spa pools are treated like swimming pools under SA rules. A spa pool needs a compliant child-safety barrier, and a new spa pool and its fencing generally need development approval, just like a pool. SA council guidance states that hard covers on spas are not an acceptable safety barrier, so plan for a compliant fence or barrier rather than relying on a lockable lid. If you’re unsure what applies to your spa, check with your council before it goes in. Read our guide to pool fencing regulations in South Australia or see pool fencing and compliance.

Spa, swim spa or spa-pool combo?

  • Outdoor spa. Best for soaking, hydrotherapy and evenings outside. The smallest footprint and the lowest cost.
  • Swim spa. A longer spa with a current to swim against, for exercise as well as soaking. See swim spas and our comparison of swim spas vs pools.
  • Spa-pool combo. If you’re planning a pool as well, building the spa at the same time usually costs less than adding it later, because the excavation, equipment, fencing and approval are shared. See pool building.

Why outdoor spas suit Adelaide

Adelaide winters are cool rather than freezing, so a well-insulated spa with a good cover holds its temperature without much heating cost. Summer evenings suit a spa run a little cooler. Most owners find they use it all year, which is the main difference between a spa and a pool you only swim in from December to March.

Frequently asked questions

How much does spa installation cost in Adelaide?

An outdoor drop-in spa typically costs $8,000 to $20,000 installed, including the unit, slab, electrical and plumbing. Semi-recessed spas typically cost $15,000 to $32,000, and custom in-ground concrete spas start at around $28,000. Site access, switchboard upgrades and surrounds are listed separately on your quote.

Does a spa need a fence in South Australia?

Generally yes. Spa pools need a compliant child-safety barrier, the same as swimming pools, and SA council guidance states that a hard spa cover is not an acceptable barrier. Check the specific requirements for your spa with your council.

Do I need a concrete slab for an outdoor spa?

Usually. A filled spa is very heavy, so most need a level, reinforced concrete slab. A deck can work if it’s engineered for the load.

Does a spa need its own power circuit?

Most do. A licensed electrician installs a dedicated circuit from the switchboard, and older homes sometimes need switchboard work first. We include this in the quote so the cost is clear up front.

How long does a spa installation take?

A drop-in outdoor spa usually takes about a week, allowing time for the slab to cure. Semi-recessed spas take longer because of the surrounds, and in-ground concrete spas take several weeks, similar to a small pool.

Can you install a spa next to an existing pool?

Often, yes. An in-ground spa can be built beside an existing pool, sometimes sharing its equipment. We check the pool’s plumbing, equipment capacity and fencing at the site visit.
