Pool renovation means bringing a tired pool back to good condition without replacing it: resurfacing the interior, replacing tiles and coping, repairing cracks and upgrading equipment. We renovate concrete and fibreglass pools across Adelaide, the Hills and the Fleurieu, from about $8,000 for a resurface to $35,000+ for a full renovation. Pool renovation cost in Adelaide

Most Adelaide pool renovations fall into one of three tiers. Where your pool lands depends on its size, the finish you choose, what is under the old surface, and how much of the equipment and surrounds you replace at the same time. Your written quote breaks every item out, so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Standard resurface — $8,000 – $18,000

Drain, prepare and resurface the interior in pebble or quartz finish, replace the waterline tile band, re-grout, refill and recommission. Best for concrete pools with a sound shell and a worn surface.

Typical scope: drain, surface preparation, new interior, tile band, recommission.

Full renovation — $15,000 – $35,000

A resurface plus new equipment (pump, filter, chlorinator), coping replacement, new lights, structural crack repair and a paving refresh. This is the “good as new” tier.

Typical scope: resurface, equipment, coping, lights, crack repairs.

Major rebuild — $30,000 – $70,000+

Major structural repairs, shape or depth changes, a full coping and paving rebuild, automation and a premium glass-tile interior. It can make sense when the alternative is demolishing and replacing the pool.

Typical scope: structural engineering, premium interior, full equipment, paving.

Signs your pool needs renovating

You don’t need to wait for a leak. These are the common signs that a renovation quote is worth getting:

  • Rough or patchy surface. The wall feels like sandpaper, or the aggregate is exposed and snags feet and swimwear.
  • Cracks. Fine surface crazing is cosmetic; cracks you can catch a fingernail in, or that grow over a season, need assessment.
  • Algae you can’t keep on top of. A porous, worn surface gives algae somewhere to hold on, so chemicals and brushing stop working as well.
  • Tiles falling off at the waterline, or loose and cracked coping stones.
  • Water loss beyond normal summer evaporation, which can point to a leak in the shell, plumbing or fittings.
  • Equipment that runs constantly without holding the water chemistry, or a pump that has become noisy.
  • Settled or cracked paving around the pool, which can let water get behind the coping.

If two or more of these apply, it is usually cheaper to plan a renovation now than to patch problems one at a time.

What happens during a pool renovation

  1. Inspection and quote. We look at the shell, surface, tiles, coping, plumbing and equipment, then give you a written quote with each item priced separately.
  2. Drain and prepare. The pool is drained (timing matters on reactive clay soils and high water tables), the old surface is cleaned or removed and any cracks are repaired.
  3. Tiles and coping. Waterline tiles, step edges and coping are replaced or re-bedded where needed.
  4. New interior. The new surface is applied and left to cure as the product requires.
  5. Refill and balance. The pool is refilled and the water is balanced carefully while the new interior settles in.
  6. Equipment and handover. Any new pump, filter, chlorinator, heater or lights are installed and we show you how everything runs.

Most resurfacing jobs take a few weeks on site, depending on the finish, the repairs needed and the weather. A full renovation with coping, paving and equipment takes longer.

Choosing an interior finish

FinishLook and feelTypical lifeCost
Pebble finishNatural, textured, many colour blendsLong-lasting with good water careMost affordable
Quartz finishSmoother, more even colourSimilar to pebble; depends on water careMid-range
Glass bead or full tilePremium sparkle or fully tiled lookVery long with tiles; grout needs careHighest
Fibreglass re-coatSmooth gel-coat style finish for fibreglass shellsDepends on the coating systemMid-range

The right choice depends on your budget, the look you want and how the pool is used. We can price more than one finish on your quote so you can compare them side by side.

Renovation vs replacement

For most pools with a sound structure, renovation is better value than replacement:

  • Cost: a resurface is a fraction of the cost of a new pool of the same size.
  • Time: most renovations take weeks rather than months.
  • Approvals: you are keeping an approved pool, though the safety barrier must stay compliant and new work such as a replacement fence may need its own approval.
  • Less risk: you’re working with a known structure, not starting fresh excavation.

Replacement is worth considering when the shell has major structural damage, when you want a very different size or shape, or when renovation costs approach the price of a new build.

Pool fencing when you renovate or sell

A renovation is a good time to check your pool barrier. In South Australia there is no pool compliance certificate or mandatory inspection when you sell. But if the pool was approved before 1 July 1993 and you sell the property, its safety features must be brought up to Ministerial Building Standard MBS 004 before settlement. Newer pools must meet the rules that applied when they were approved. See our pool fencing service and the SA pool fencing rules guide, and check specifics with your council.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to resurface a pool in Adelaide?

A standard resurface of a concrete pool is typically $8,000 – $18,000, depending on the pool size, the finish and how much preparation the old surface needs. A full renovation with equipment, coping and repairs is typically $15,000 – $35,000.

How often does a pool need resurfacing?

It depends on the finish and how well the water chemistry has been kept. Pebble and quartz finishes last many years with good water care; poorly balanced water shortens their life. Read our guide on when to resurface a pool for the signs to watch for.

Can you renovate a fibreglass pool?

Yes. Fibreglass pools can be re-coated, and fittings, coping, lights and equipment can be replaced. The shell must be sound, and draining a fibreglass pool needs care so it doesn’t move in the ground.

Do I need council approval to renovate my pool?

Like-for-like resurfacing and repairs to an approved pool generally don’t need new development approval. Structural changes, a new or replacement safety fence, or changes to the size of the pool may need approval. Check with your council before work starts.

Can I upgrade equipment at the same time?

Yes, and it’s usually the most cost-effective time to do it. Many owners add a variable-speed pump, a salt chlorinator, LED lights or pool heating as part of a renovation.
