Lap pool cost in Adelaide

Lap pools come back in three broad price tiers. Where yours lands depends on the length, the construction type, your site and the finish you choose. Your written quote breaks the cost down line by line.

10m fibreglass lap pool — $60,000 – $90,000

A factory-made 10m lap shell with a consistent swimming depth. Faster to install than concrete, with a smooth surface that is easy to keep clean.

Typical scope: shell, full equipment, coping, paving allowance.

12m–15m concrete lap pool — $95,000 – $160,000

A custom concrete lap pool, 12 to 15 metres end to end, with the depth set to suit how you swim. Lane markings, end-wall targets and a tiled or pebble interior.

Typical scope: engineered shell, lane fittings, full equipment, interior finish.

Architectural lap pool — $140,000 – $230,000+

A lap pool designed as a feature: a long edge to a view, a vanishing edge on a sloping block, a glass-tile interior, full automation and often a spa at one end.

Typical scope: architect collaboration, structural engineering, premium materials, automation.

How long should a lap pool be?

LengthWho it suitsNotes
10mFitness swimmers on standard blocksEnough for a steady rhythm with frequent turns
12mRegular lap swimmersA good balance of block space and stroke length
15mKeen swimmers and triathletesFewer turns; needs a long, clear side or rear yard
15m+Large or rural blocksUsually concrete; check access and approvals early

Many Adelaide blocks are long and narrow, which suits a lap pool well. Before you settle on a length, check the setbacks and site coverage that apply to your block under the Planning and Design Code, and leave room for the safety barrier and paving.

Lap pool depth

A consistent depth is what makes a lap pool comfortable to swim in. Around 1.2 metres is a common minimum for adult lap swimming, and somewhat deeper suits taller swimmers and people who want to tumble-turn. A deeper section isn’t needed unless you want one for other uses. We’ll recommend a depth based on who will swim in the pool and how.

Fibreglass or concrete for a lap pool?

  • Fibreglass is quicker to install and usually cheaper for lengths up to about 10–12 metres. Shell sizes are fixed, and very long shells can be hard to transport and crane into a tight Adelaide backyard.
  • Concrete can be built to any length, width and depth, which makes it the usual choice for 12m+ lap pools, sloping sites and architectural designs. It takes longer to build and costs more.

Lap pool features worth planning at quote stage

  • Lane markings and end targets. Tiled lines and end-wall targets help you swim straight and pace your turns. They’re easy to include at build stage and costly to add later.
  • Heating. A heat pump or solar heating, plus a thermal cover, makes a lap pool usable well beyond the hottest months. See pool heating.
  • Swim jets. In a shorter pool, a counter-current jet can add resistance training.
  • Automation. App control of the pump, heating and lights makes regular early-morning swims easier.
  • A spa at one end. A spa pod sharing the pool’s equipment is often cheaper to build at the same time than to add later.

Approvals and fencing

A new lap pool needs development approval, and it must be enclosed by a compliant child-safety barrier at least 1.2 metres high. The barrier must be finished within two months of the pool being completed, or before the pool is filled, whichever is earlier. Read our guides to council approval for pools in SA and SA pool fencing rules.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a lap pool cost in Adelaide?

A 10m fibreglass lap pool is typically $60,000 – $90,000. A 12m–15m concrete lap pool is typically $95,000 – $160,000, and architectural lap pools run from about $140,000 upwards. Your written quote is based on your block and the finish you choose.

What is the minimum length for a lap pool?

There is no fixed rule, but most people find 10 metres is the shortest length that feels like proper lap swimming. If your block is shorter, a plunge pool with a swim jet or a swim spa may suit you better.

Can a lap pool fit on a narrow Adelaide block?

Often, yes. Lap pools suit long, narrow blocks. Setbacks, site coverage, easements and access for machinery and the shell decide what fits, so we check those before quoting.

How long does it take to build a lap pool?

Once approvals are in place, a fibreglass lap pool typically takes 4–8 weeks on site and a concrete lap pool 10–14 weeks, depending on the site and the weather.
