Tier 1 — outdoor spa drop-in: $8,000–$20,000
Self-contained acrylic spa (Sapphire, Spa World, Oasis, Just Spas), 2–4 seats, hydrotherapy jets, full insulation. Concrete pad, single-phase electrical, plumbing tie-in. Fastest install, simplest electrical, most flexible — moves with you if you sell. Best fit for households wanting hydrotherapy without committing to a full in-ground build.
Tier 2 — semi-recessed install: $15,000–$32,000
Spa unit set into the deck so the rim is flush, often with feature surrounds (timber decking, stone tiles, planter integration). Looks more architectural than a drop-in. Requires partial excavation.
Tier 3 — in-ground concrete spa: $28,000–$65,000+
Custom-built concrete spa, often paired with a pool (shared equipment) or as a standalone hydrotherapy installation. Premium tile or pebble interior, hydrotherapy jets, automation, lighting. Architect-quality finish.
What’s included
Spa quotes typically include the spa unit (or built structure), base slab, electrical isolation, plumbing tie-in, and basic finish surrounds. Premium tiers add lighting, automation, premium tile interior.
What’s separate
Pool fencing (if there isn’t one already, the spa needs a compliant safety barrier, the same as a pool — SA council guidance says a hard spa cover isn’t an acceptable barrier). Heating is usually built-in for self-contained spas; in-ground spas need a separate heater or shared pool equipment. Pergolas, shade, landscaping are separate trades.
Building a spa with a pool
If you’re considering both a pool and a spa, building the spa at the same time as the pool is often cheaper than adding one later, because excavation, plumbing, equipment and fencing can be shared. Ask for both options to be priced so you can compare.
